• W.P. No. of 2004: Illegal Structures around Hussain Sagar

Forum files a PIL

As the State Govt was not sensitive and responsive with regard to the impending ecological disaster from the proposed tourism projects around Hussain Sagar, the Forum, along with member organization Samata, was left with no alternative but to file a Public Interest Litigation in A.P. High Court against the projects. For more details, see Lakes & Water Resources in the website.

During the last two years, the Forum had also taken up the following issues, which need to be pursued during this year:

The Forum had printed and circulated handouts highlighting the pollution problems related with immersion of Ganesh Idols in Hussain Sagar and suggesting certain remedial measures and also interacted with Ganesh Utsav Committee and the Police Commissioner.

The hand outs on Noise Pollution in English and Telugu were printed with the sponsorship of APPCB and circulated through out the State for creating awareness regarding noise pollution.

Awareness campaign against plastic carry bags was undertaken in coordination with the member organization, Civic Exnora, Jubilee Hills.

Suggestions were submitted to Hyderabad Urban Development Authority regarding Draft Master Plan 2020 for Hyderabad .

Forum approached the A.P. Pollution Control Board on the location of Balkampet station of the proposed MMTS in the compound of the Nature Cure Hospital in violation of Noise Pollution (Control) Rules 2000. The plan of the station was substantially modified later.

Forum suggested several measures on protection of water bodies and reduction of vehicular pollution.

Forum has been opposing the shifting of industrial pollution from Patancheru into the Musi River through a pipe line. It will further destroy the villages in the downstream of Musi.

Forum took up the issue of ship-breaking unit at Vodarevu in Prakasam district of A.P. and got it stalled through a PIL. Ship-breaking is one of the most hazardous activities and our state should not become a dumping ground for ships of the developed countries. The SARA (Shore Area Development Authority) has also not cleared the ship-breaking unit.

Others: The Forum has been taking up several activities which can not be mentioned here due to space constraints.

 Issues in the coming period

The focus will be on the following issues during the current year 2001-2002, in addition to holistic development of Musi River:

Urban air pollution due to automobile emissions

Protection and preservation of lakes in and around Hyderabad

Development of parks and green belts in and around Hyderabad

Municipal solid waste management

Domestic sewage treatment and management
